Operations Manager – West Side Hydro
(R17-333)
In this role, the individual will work with others on the WSH management team to transform the culture to a one of continuous improvement in a competitive marketplace. This individual will develop and direct the implementation of the Operating Plan and identify those areas which may need improvement or further development. They will also ensure that plant operating conditions are within our FERC License requirements and plant equipment limitations.
You will support our journey by:
Managing Operations Staff
- Overseeing the activities of the operating staff, including managing and directing a diverse work force of union personnel. Selecting, directing, organizing, training, developing, coaching, assessing performance, and motivating plant staff to carry out operations functions. Evaluating and rewarding performance. Applying retained management rights to the Union Agreement and local work rules. This includes:
- Regularly conducting one-on-one meetings with employees to engage them in the operation of the plant, developing plant objectives and suggestions for continuous improvement.
- Coaching, counseling, advising and mentoring employees to meet and exceed performance expectations.
- Establishing training objectives and qualification for operations employees and ensures all operations employees are properly trained. Determining employee development needs and provides coaching, career counseling and development opportunities. Providing vision and serving as a role model for leadership throughout the Company. Demonstrating flexibility and commitment toward rotational assignments.
- Ensuring uniform application and consistency of Company policies and procedures for operations personnel, including administering and/or reviewing disciplinary actions.
- Sustaining the morale and motivation of operations personnel and handle employee grievances as they arise.
- Initiating, defining, delineating, implementing and overseeing safety programs and policies.
- Developing, promoting and maintaining an outstanding team culture that practices the Guiding Behaviors: Be Accountable, Dignify People, Make the Right Thing Happen, Positive Attitude, Team Behavior and Earn Trust.
· Managing the operation of projects not owned by PGE but integrated into the hydro project in accordance with contract requirements and maximizing the benefit to PGE while maintaining confidence and satisfaction of the owners.
· Ensuring emergency readiness, as necessary, by assisting with implementation of an emergency action plan. Lead and/or participate in periodic staff training in carrying out the plan for each plant as they relate to floods, earthquakes, fire, equipment or structural failures and other emergencies as they may arise.
· Representing the Hydro project and the company by hosting tours or visits as needed. When needed, acting as a media spokesperson for the Hydro project and/or PGE. Acting as Plant Manager and/or Maintenance Manager in their absence.
· Investigating incidents, reviewing incident reports and taking corrective action as required.
Planning and Budgeting
- Developing and managing plant operations annual financial budget and long-term operation plans.
- Working with Maintenance to plan, coordinate and execute all outages to assure minimum down time.
- Developing operating plans and directing plant conditions to ensure availability and reliability is maintained to meet PGE Power Operations’ needs.
- Preparing required operations reports.
- Maintaining the plant Operations Manual, make recommendations for operating policy to Plant Manager and assure that operating policies are kept up-to-date.
- Overseeing the daily upkeep of necessary plant logs and records.
- Coordinating operational requirements to satisfy maintenance needs.
- Investigating accidents, reviewing accident reports and taking corrective action as required.
Developing and Maintaining Regulatory and External Relationships
- Maintaining proper and productive relationships with various regulatory parties, auditors and public agencies by meeting requirements and commitments and resolving outstanding issues
- Ensuring good community perception is achieved.
You will bring the following skills to our team:
- A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, with a technical focus (Engineering, Science, Construction Management, etc) strongly desired.
- A Minimum of 10 years of experience in operations and/or engineering of a generation plant.
- 5 or more years’ of experience as a manager or supervisor with increasing levels of responsibility, demonstrated ability to build teams, coach, facilitate, negotiate and energize employees and others.
- Comprehensive experience in reviewing and analyzing abstract and complex technical, policy and financial issues related to the operation of power plants.
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical and power plant operation as demonstrated through previous experience
- Thorough knowledge of fundamental engineering/economic principles and concepts.
- Thorough knowledge of reporting and compliance requirements to all agencies directly related to the operation of the plant.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of operations-specific metrics to monitor and manage plant performance including a thorough understanding of root cause analysis techniques and operational procedure development and application
- Thorough knowledge of budgetary and planning practices and project management with a working knowledge of accounting principles and company financial reports
- Understanding of the fundamental electrical and mechanical aspects of power plant systems.
- Strategic thinking capability for developing ideas and plans that support total business objective and goals.
- Excellent written, verbal communication and human relations skills. Experience in facilitating meetings, negotiating and presenting to plant staff.
- Working knowledge of contract administration and managing relationships with construction contractors, including experience in reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
- Maintain a valid drivers’ license and a history of safe driving practices.
