Systems Engineer
Position Summary:
This position is available for 90% remote work. Must be available to drive to campus for emergencies or datacenter work occasionally.
The Systems Engineer (SE) is responsible for the maintenance, reliability, security and performance of systems on the University’s Server Infrastructure and the VMware platform. With other members of the Infrastructure Services team, the SE deploys and integrates services and applications within the virtual systems infrastructure. With the Senior Systems Engineer and the Director of Systems Engineering, the SE provides leadership with the operations and support of enterprise and endpoint systems. In collaboration with the Director of Systems Engineering, the SE supports the management and engineering of Linux and Windows based servers. The SE coordinates system activities with application developers, network engineers, and stakeholders from the University community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deploys and maintains hyperconverged systems infrastructure in a hybrid cloud environment (i.e. campus-based systems, VMC, Azure, etc.) which includes virtual machines running Windows and Linux operating systems, physical systems running the ESXi hypervisor, vSAN, vDS, NSX and VxRail.
- Plans, tests, and installs applications, performs regular software and firmware upgrades, and routinely patches enterprise systems in a manner ensuring high availability and security. Effectively use Ansible automation software, PowerCLI, and bash scripting.
- Responsible for Windows and Linux operating systems and deploying security patches.
- Deploys new Linux and Windows VMs via Ansible and Azure Automate / Azure Bicep.
- Designs, implements and manages comprehensive 24×7 health monitoring systems with What’s Up Gold and built-in VMware alerting systems.
- Manages and assists in the use and deployment of Graylog to all virtual systems.
- Collaborates with other Infrastructure members on the design and administration of the University’s PKI infrastructure.
- Attends and actively contributes to weekly engineering and infrastructure meetings.
- Collaborates with database administrators and application owners to build system configurations that adequately address functional requirements on-prem and in the cloud.
- Ensures consistent reporting and tailors event logging in order to meet security and audit requirements.
- Add newly created VMs to University backup infrastructure using Cohesity data management platform.
- Responds in a timely manner to customer service issues in the service management & project portfolio ticketing platform.
- Provides mid-tier technical support for Google Workspace issues such as email routing and management.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Oversee all security and traffic issues related to special campus events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
- Maintains technical currency through research, independent study, formal training and attending technical conferences.
- Physically retires or deploys new infrastructure to the various SJU datacenters.
- Develops and maintains documentation for systems deployments and upgrades.
- Participates in regular DR exercises, and ensures that DR documentation is updated as system changes are completed.
- Deploys Windows VMs and virtual appliances with utilities such as MDT.
- Recommends solutions based on research and evaluating industry trends.
- Evaluates cost and value proposition of on-prem and cloud solutions.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
- Must be able to sit or stand for considerable periods of time at a computer, ability to lift hardware, and be able to replace system components in the case of failure.
- Transporting equipment on a hand truck.
- Occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for critical systems problems on campus.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field and/or a combination of education, certifications, and experience.
- Five or more years of demonstrated experience with working knowledge of VMware.
- Five or more years of experience with Linux operating systems.
- Knowledge of best practices in computing security and administration.
- Firm understanding of modern DevOps technologies such as Ansible, GIT, and Docker.
- Must possess excellent problem-solving, organization, interpersonal, written and oral skills and professional skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented, inclusive and diverse environment and demonstrate initiative and self-management of tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three or more years of experience with Google Workspace and Google Management.
- Three or more years programming in PowerCLI and bash scripting.
- Certifications in VMware, AWS, or Azure, preferred.
- Experience with AWS or Azure a plus.
