Lab and Clinical Coordinator

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

A registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility for planning, teaching, and evaluating the nursing laboratory and students in the clinical area. The instructor has the overall responsibility of providing quality instruction for the students.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required. A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred and required within five years of hire if the highest degree is Bachelor’s.
  • Requirements: Three to five years of experience in teaching or working with clinical nursing students (preferably on the community college level), or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
  • Ability to work with adults in an educational setting
  • Current unencumbered Virginia RN license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Contribute to all activities related to the mission of the College and the Program.
  • Demonstrate concern and dedication to the education of the students.
  • Maintain and exhibit mastery of simulation.
  • Organize and assess the orientation each semester for new clinical/lab instructors.
  • Determine clinical placement and schedules for nursing students each semester in coordination with faculty, including clinical sites and facilities, orientation, and preceptor assignments where applicable
  • Responsible for planning and organizing the nursing lab courses each semester in coordination with faculty
  • Coordinate and assist in all nursing labs.
  • Identify and formulate needed clinical contracts with all clinical facilities.
  • Verify students’ readiness including physical exam, CPR, criminal background check, and immunizations/titers. (in conjunction with administrative assistant)
  • Assess labs and equipment for readiness including: a. Equipment and supplies, and their security b. Organize outreach lab supplies for distribution c. Inventory and reorder needed lab supplies d. Formulate budget recommendations
  • Assist full-time faculty with end-of-course testing.
  • Assist in the process of student counseling and advisement.
  • Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating the curricula leading to an associate degree in applied science in nursing
  • Effectively use a variety of teaching/learning strategies to promote a spirit of inquiry and to stimulate student learning.
  • Ensure that the student progresses towards graduation in a timely manner by registering for appropriate sequences of courses each semester.
  • Counsel students regarding his/her academic progress.
  • Assist students in academic achievement through support, remediation and tutoring.
  • Provide opportunities for student and graduate evaluation of curriculum and teaching and program effectiveness.
  • Responsible for clinical and have the same responsibilities and duties as clinical adjunct when assignment includes clinicals.
  • Provide assistance and/or act as consultant to educational or other agencies.
  • Advance expertise through additional study in areas of specialization.
  • Maintain an active role in nursing program, and college activities through individual participation in committee activities and College-sponsored events.
  • Support the growth of the College through both formal and informal student recruitment and retention activities.
  • Support the standards of the College through the implementation of effective teaching focused on guiding the student towards promotion and graduation.
  • Foster student socialization through incorporation of the mission of the College, the nursing program mission and philosophy, individual instruction and personal guidance.
  • Use personal and professional abilities through participation in public service activities that promote the well being of individuals and groups within the service region of the College, the state, and the nation.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
