Executive Director - Barry County Commission on Aging
The Commission on Aging (COA) for Barry County is looking for an Executive Director. The
purpose of this position is to direct and supervise all employees, programs and services involved in meeting the needs of the senior population in Barry County. This includes oversight of administration, budgeting, programs and nutrition, foster collaborative partnerships with other agencies in the state and county, and marketing the COA through media presentations, publications and brochures to help promote the needs of seniors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by the COA Executive Director. The Executive Director may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in this description.
• Oversees all day to day operations, programs and activities.
• Manages employee selection, training and employee relations.
• Manage staff needs and requirements so they can perform at the highest level.
• Promotes a positive work environment.
• Ensures financial viability of the COA.
• Researches alternative funding sources including grants, donations and other innovative
approaches.
• Directs the development of operating and capital budgets.
• Monitors the fiscal performance and ensures adherence to required budgeting guidelines.
• Ensures that payroll, bills, and other expenses are paid accurately and on time.
• Reviews employee salaries and benefits to ensure they are properly maintained.
• Recommends and implements COA policy as established by the Board.
• Develops goals and objectives for the COA and its staff.
• Initiates other procedures and directives as necessary.
• Prepares all required documents and packets for the monthly Board meetings.
• Responds as requested to the directions of the Board.
• Continually evaluates the services and programs offered by the COA.
• Researches new programs and services that foster dignity, independence and purpose for
seniors.
• Promotes COA by developing brochures and publications to market the programs and
services the COA offers.
• Meets regularly with community representatives, county agencies, media and others to
explain the programs, services and ongoing needs of seniors.
• Represents the COA by participating in state and local organizations regarding senior
issues.
• Attends meetings, serves on boards and participates in work groups within the community
that deal with senior health care, suicide, abuse and other senior issues.
• Prepares and maintains a variety of files, records, documents and reports.
• Ensures that all required documents and reports, both federal and state, are filed accurately
and on time.
• Assists seniors with problems relating to aging, housing, finances and other consumer
issues.
• Makes referrals as necessary to obtain the best services available and always advocates for
seniors.
• Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in the Human
Services Field, Public Administration, Business Administration or a closely related field.
• Experience: 3 - 5 years of progressively responsible experience working with older adults,
including managerial and supervisory experience providing familiarity with personnel administration and budgeting.
